Sept 2020 Australian Hearing Hub
The Shepherd Centre is excited to announce its newest initiative, HearHub, an online platform that will take its world-leading clinical programs global. With The Shepherd Centre’s 50 years of excellence in clinical program delivery and research, HearHub will ensure clinicians and families anywhere in Australia and the world can access the organisation’s clinical tools and educational programs.
This program is unique in its potential to enable thousands of children with hearing loss to develop the listening, speech, language and social skills needed to reach their full potential. With hearing loss being the most common disability diagnosed at birth, the opportunity to provide worldwide clinical support crossing time zones and geographical boundaries is invaluable.
Access to early intervention is critical to ensure children can overcome the barriers of hearing loss. In Australia, approximately 50% of children with hearing loss do not have access to these life-changing programs. Globally, this figure expands alarmingly.
As specialised early intervention services across Australia and worldwide vary significantly, children may not necessarily receive sufficient support to fully develop the skills they need to thrive. Lost potential, low academic achievement and diminished social and community engagement can follow irregular intervention, and the chance to provide clinical best-practice for families and clinicians worldwide will help reduce potential disadvantage and exclusion.
Funding to support the initial stages of the program’s roll out over the next two years has been provided through philanthropic support. HearHub’s ability to transform the landscape of childhood hearing loss will change the future for countless young children and their families across the world
